Planning and implementing pre-plantation activities

Activities under the agro-horti-forestry component of Wadi have to be done in a time-bound and sequential manner. This is especially critical in the first year, when much of the tree plantation work is done, generally after commencement of the monsoons.

A lot of preparatory work has to be done, to ensure that plantation is done smoothly and efficiently. Adequate budgetary support, labour, and inputs have to be made available in a timely manner. Suitably trained staff and people’s organisations (POs) have to be in place for effecting delivery.

Pits have to be dug in advance and adequate supply of saplings and inputs has to be ensured.

In BAIF-Wadi projects, saplings of multi-purpose tree species (MPTS) are procured from nurseries set up in the project area itself, by POs, with project support. Saplings of selected fruit tree varieties are initially sourced from recognised nurseries. Subsequently they are bought from nurseries established in the project area itself, or other project areas.

While estimating demand for saplings, possibility of high mortality rate in the first few months has to be taken into consideration. The mortality rate could be 40% or more. (Over 5 years of the establishment stage, the mortality rate is around 8-12%).

If there is a major delay or hiccup in pre-plantation activities, roll out of the agro-horti-forestry component can get practically delayed by a year, severely impacting overall project performance.

Below is a sample schedule for implementation of pre-plantation activities, to be commenced around 8 months before plantation:
